One Day at the Gem Mine – Hunting Down Crystals and Gems

Always in search of a fresh adventure, my children decided to check out a gem mine two hours off to search for crystals and gems. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was excited nonetheless.

I realized that mines can work with different methods. Some have prefilled buckets of dirt. Owners with the mine will take buckets with dirt raised in the mine and let you undergo them searching for gemstones. Some owners will prefill the buckets with a few crystals and gems in order that everyone gets to find something.

The mine that people visited worked a bit differently and is what is known a fee dig. Fees dig occurs when you pay a set amount of cash which enable it to acquire whatever you find. Think when it like leasing the land to mine for gems for the given period of time, in this case, each day.

If we got there, we created your own five gallon buckets, as instructed on their website. We met owners with the main office and paid a set amount for each individual. This entitled us with a bucket’s worth of whatever we found and desired to collect.

We descended the hill toward the primary digging areas. Individuals who owned the mine will bring up dirt from underground, then spread against each other within the digging areas using a bulldozer for people to go through.

Using hand tools and shovels, we all got smart and began looking for crystals and gems within the dirt. Not having experience in geology, I had been worried that individuals would dispose of something valuable. Don’t worry though, because there were always friendly people around propose and us from throwing back anything worth keeping.

In order to improve your experience before maneuvering to the mine, use guide books to be aware what kind of minerals are normally based in the area that you’re visiting.

Also, bring an area guide along with you when you visit the mine. Gemstones inside their natural form look quite unique of the polished or cut versions most people are knowledgeable about.

To help you obtain the smaller gems among the dirt, most mines may sluice. This is commonly a wooden channel with running water. You require a scoop of dirt make it inside a sieve, then the choice is yours from the running water. The water will wash away the lesser items of dirt and clay, forgetting rocks that you can pick through.

Take care, though, that smaller crystals with potential value do not get washed away, if you are being unsure if something have will be worth keeping, always ask someone. We finished up finding many nice crystals and gems that day with the mine, so could you!
