The Magical Handshake ~ Have you ever Used it? By Faith Faith BBE, CTM, NE

Everyone knows the value of a good first impression. In mere seconds of a meeting, people attain various details about us. They notice our face, hair, clothing, body size, posture, demeanor and also the sound of our voice. It’s a crucial time as there is no second opportunity to produce a good first impression.

This happens … the handshake.

I remember when i took a communications class with a nearby church. The trainer had 30+ attendees lineup single file. The instructions would look him in the eye and shake his hand. Hand Shake had been confident I knew how you can properly shake hands.

After the last person shook the instructor’s hand, he asked, “Tell me what you thought about my handshake. Could it have been an excellent handshake or even a bad handshake?” I liked his handshake. It had been a firm grip like mine. His handshake confirmed if you ask me I knew the best way to shake hands. I said, like everyone else, “good handshake.”

Then he said a thing that completely involved by surprise.

He was quoted saying the reason why everybody liked his handshake was simple. He mirrored ours. When the handshake was firm, his was firm. If it was a light touch, his would be a light touch. Should they used their other hand to understand his, his contrary grasped theirs. He explained this handshake technique creates an instantaneous good impression and likeability.

Likeability?

Yes. It’s similar to the way we feel whenever we meet a complete stranger and discover we share the same name. Or when in conversation having a stranger, we learn we share a mutual friend. We magically like this person. This is why I refer to it as the Magical Handshake.

From this level on, It is advisable to never, ever, shake another person’s hand. Instead, allow them to shake yours. Mirror the things they’re doing. If you’re offered a company grip, mirror a strong grip. If you’re offered a soft grip, mirror a soft grip. Remember to mirror the shake too. It’s everything about the grip and shake.

The only real exception happens when someone provides you with a handshake making use of their palm facing down. While you shake hands, they have the upper-hand and so are in charge. They dominate. This is what’s called an aggressive handshake.

When offered a hostile handshake, respond by providing them a Double-Handed handshake having a wee turn. Start with your palms slightly upwards, grasping their hand with of yours. Then, straighten their handshake vertically having a wee turn as you’re shaking. This communicates to them, “we are equal.”

The next time you want to create a good first impression, supply the Magical Handshake a go. Take action whenever you park and fly people. It’s an easy, surefire approach to enhance your likeability factor.
