Today the kernels are mechanically cold pressed (heat damages the oil’s chemical properties). The tree is rare, extracting the oil is labour intensive… to ensure the high price. However, the good thing is a bit oil goes further.

The scarcity from the argan tree is the place the challenge lies. There are so many products on the market now that have argan oil or are marketed as ‘argan oil’ or ‘Moroccan oil’. However if you simply examine the label, there are often other ingredients (for example silicon) in larger quantities as opposed to actual argan oil. Cosmetic companies should work tirelessly to ensure that the provision of argan oil is sustainable as well as an exceptional, untainted by other oils or substances.

How do you know you are receiving the real thing? If you’re purchasing a product containing argan oil – confirm the ingredients.
